At The British International School of New York, we believe that wearing a uniform fosters a strong sense of pride, unity, and community among our students. Students in the Lower School (Nursery through Year 6) and Middle School (Year 7 through Year 9) wear a formal uniform, while those in the Upper School (Year 10 through Year 13) follow a smart dress code that reflects their growing independence.

 

To make the process as smooth as possible for families, this guide includes everything you need to know about purchasing the uniform through our official supplier, Lands’ End, as well as details about dress expectations for Upper School students, PE kits, house colors, and additional items provided directly by the school or to be purchased independently.

 

We’ve also included answers to the most frequently asked questions (such as how to get started, what to buy, and what to wear on PE days) so you can feel confident in preparing your child for the school year.

Uniform FAQs

1. How do I get started with the uniform? (Nursery–Year 9)


    • Our official supplier is Lands’ End. To shop:
    • Look out for promotions from Lands’ End — contact the school to check if any are currently running.
 
  • For taller students, consider purchasing adult sizes by selecting the “Adult” tab on each product page.

  • For sizing assistance, please contact Lands’ End directly at 1-800-469-2222.

The Upper School embraces a student’s growing independence, individuality, and creativity, which is reflected in the day-to-day dress code. Students should be dressed appropriately for a professional learning environment, acknowledging their important position within the school as role models to younger students for whom they will come into contact with frequently. Upper School students may wear items such as jeans, hoodies, and trainers, but always ensuring their attire reflects their high personal standards and promotes a positive and productive attitude to study.

 

There will be specific events throughout the year when all Upper School students are required to dress formally, such as Speech Day, school photo day, curriculum-related presentations, and offsite endeavors as part of the service-learning provision. If a student has any queries about appropriate dress for school, they are encouraged to speak with their mentor or Divisional Head.

From Year 1 upwards, your child’s House Color determines the color of their PE polo shirt. Nursery and Reception students all wear red polos.

 

House Color Assignments:

  • Shakespeare = Blue

  • Glennie = White

  • King = Red

  • Daily uniform pieces (trousers, polos, skirts, etc.)

    • Optional for Years 2–4

    • Required for Years 5–9

Not Supplied by BIS-NY or Lands’ End (purchase independently):

 

  • School shoes (black)

  • Sports shoes (white or primarily white)

  • Socks/tights (white, black, navy, or grey)

  • Swimwear (Speedo or similar, in black or navy)

  • School bags (if not buying from Lands’ End)

Summer vs. Winter Uniform:


Students may wear either uniform in September. We officially switch to Winter Uniform after the long weekend in October.

 

PE Uniform:


Students wear their house color PE polo on scheduled PE days and for events like Sports Day.
