Mathematics in the Middle Years focuses on four strands of Mathematics: Number, Geometry, Algebra and Probability with Statistics. It is important, whenever possible, to instil a foundation of creativity and imagination in the learning of Mathematics, so that students can think their way around any difficulties or inconsistencies in their solutions and apply their mathematical knowledge to the world in which we live.

The best way to describe this thought process is the poetry of logical ideas; to become their own best teachers and to never stop questioning. Through activities such as “The Knight’s Journey” in chess or real-life exploration of the Pythagorean Theorem, we encourage students to explore concepts, theories and algorithms through their own lens as well as from new perspectives to give them a complete and powerful mathematical experience.

Mathematics in the middle school is taught at two levels. There is the Standard Level, which provides the full English National Curriculum with extensions into higher level concepts and Extended Level, which, in addition to this, tackles more complex concepts that challenge students and stretch their mathematical acumen. Through these programs, all students are presented with learning opportunities that go beyond the typical and push students to develop the skills, knowledge, and disposition of proficient mathematicians.
