Last month the first Saturday after spring break, saw four BIS-NY teams heading to the regional debate tournament in Terrytown! Despite a 6am departure time, twelve smiling, knowledgeable and excited students met the debate coaches and judges at BIS-NY ready to start the day. With five successful rounds, the students tried out their debate chops amongst the best of the best in the East Coast. Students thoughtfully debated the merits of holding the Dzhokhar Tsarnaev trial in Boston, approving the release of genetically modified insects and Obama’s community college plan, among other resolutions. Each team experienced success, with one team winning 3-5 debates! We were very proud of every student who journeyed to Hackley School with us for a 15 hour day of teamwork, quick thinking, speed-writing and argumentation. Congratulations!
April 25th marked the last debate of the year! BIS-NY opened it’s doors once again to the Big Apple Debate League and hosted a great tournament. Our junior debaters revved their engines and geared up to take on the other Big Apple teams who did not participation in the regional tournament. They tackled the same resolutions debated there and artfully argued these hot topic issues. A special congratulations goes out to Alex, who won 7th place and took the top speaker award for BIS-NY and to Anthony, Kemello and Max who took 4th place.
It has been a wonderful season and we are very proud of all our students’ hard work!
We would also like to extend a big, warm, heartfelt thank you to our fantastic judges and supporters! Thank you to Martin Cook, Natalie Clark, Hershney Mbalati, Mollie Calabrese and Katie Carr, as well as Mr. Phelps, Ms. Ghouse Ms. Schwartz and Jayson Torres! We could not have had such success this year without the support of every one of you. Thank you!!
