The general feel of BIS-NY is one of such nurturing and happiness — what more could a child ask for? The school’s strong ethic to broaden children’s outlook on the world and current events gives them such confidence from a very early age; it gives the school its own unique personality not seen anywhere else in New York.

At The British International School of New York, the House System forms an integral and highly popular part of the school.

Our House system offers the opportunity for our students to meet and socialize with students in other age groups and classes and encourages students to share experiences in a supportive environment. Within our diverse school population, our House system successfully fosters a sense of belonging and community.

House meetings are held regularly for the students, in which information is shared and key issues are discussed. Activities like Buddy Reading across the year groups and competitive games form a firm part of these meetings, designed to encourage maximum participation and comradeship within each house. There are also inter-house sporting competitions every half-term which highlight students' aptitude for teamwork, their sportsmanship and camaraderie. In the House system, students participate in cooperative competitions to earn points for their house. Partnered with the Community Outreach Committee, the houses work together to help their House Charities: Glennie for Pencils of Promise, Shakespeare for Right to Play, and King for Thirst Project.

We are proud of what a positive contribution the House System has to all students' schooling experience and identity and believe it prepares them to work productively as part of a group, increases their sense of belonging, and encourages positive competition.

House Mission Statement:

BIS-NY’s house system is an inclusive and collaborative community designed to strengthen our identity through coopertition* during community service, academic, creative, and athletic pursuits.

*Coopertition: a combination of competition and cooperation.  It is the idea that teams help each other in the face of competition and although you’re competing you assist and help others along the way.
