Culture and Community

There are no strangers in this world, only friends you haven't met yet.

At The British International School of New York we pride ourselves on a welcoming and unifying culture that pervades beyond pick up and drop off and the school halls, to touch every aspect of the school, and every member of our community.

From the very first days as a BIS-NY family, it is the school's priority to help connect its new families with friends in the same year group and other families at the school. Playdates before term starts, or connections with families that live locally are arranged so children arrive at school reassured and with a friend they know in place. The school is small enough to ensure everyone knows each other by face and by name and that there are truly no strangers.

Our Parents' Association is warm and welcoming, and in a school where there is no fundraising, its primary mission is to help settle, inform and support all families in the school. Regular meetings with the school leadership team encourage active dialogue between the school and the parent body. An engaging and enjoyable calendar of events both social and school related lets parental friendships evolve and flourish as much as the students.

Outside the school gates BIS-NY takes its community responsibility very seriously and the school is continually expanding the ways in which teachers and students, whatever their age, can contribute to the wider community in a meaningful way. A shining example of this is BIS-NY Cares, when students from across the school turn their attention to how they can actively make a difference in the local community, be it potting and tending flower boxes for the elderly, making pillows and toys for local animal shelters or birthday boxes for under-privileged children in the NYC area.

Charity and giving back form an important element of community at BIS-NY, and is undertaken through a number of channels. Many of these initiatives are spearheaded by our students and serve to reinforce their life skills and appreciation for the world.

There are no strangers in this world, only friends you haven't met yet.
