BIS-NY Parent

At BIS-NY we recognise the importance of these first steps in education and choosing the correct learning environment for your children to begin their journey.

It is our aim to ensure that your child is happy and settled but also engaged, challenged and supported in their daily school life. During these critical Early Years, children learn to deal with their feelings, become responsible, make decisions and gradually become independent.

Respect for the uniqueness of each child is key, with each child’s developmental level considered and accommodated. ‘Learning through doing’ is central to our beliefs. Work and play are interchangeable, and all classroom experiences yield learning opportunities, an approach which offers a rich and stimulating experience for BIS-NY’s youngest learners. Our classrooms, playgrounds and communal space provide an empathetic context for listening to children and their ideas and promote effective, happy learning.

Teachers in the Early Years strive to provide an engaging environment where the individual needs of the whole child are nurtured. They excel at providing interactive, inquiry-based learning experiences that develop children’s skills of literacy and numeracy in a context that is purposeful, meaningful and challenging. Working closely with the children to gain an understanding of how each child learns, enables teachers to tailor the curriculum to individual children’s needs. Children are active learners in all areas of the curriculum. They are encouraged to investigate, question, discover and given every opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a variety of contexts.

The development of social skills, early language and communication skills, along with developing physical agility and dexterity are of paramount importance. The IB learner profile attributes are also introduced at this time, and these will continue to inspire the work of pupils as they move through the school. The transdisciplinary concept-based approach of the I.B. Primary Years Program promotes creative and critical thinking, focusing on problem solving and inquiry while incorporating basic skills at all levels. In combination with the English National Curriculum 'Early Years Foundation Stage', children learn a modern language (either French or Spanish), and are taught weekly by highly-skilled specialists in PE, Music and Drama.

Reading and writing are taught through phonics. Emergent writing skills are developed through a range of resources appropriate to each child’s stage of development. Mathematical concepts are taught through practical, meaningful demonstrations and consolidated across the curriculum. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive screen and a range of technology to reflect the importance of early acquisition of the application and familiarity of a variety of skills. Many trips are organised to tie in with unit work, helping to consolidate the relevant learning as well as promoting deeper friendships and life-long memories.

Assessment is the result of ongoing individualized observation of children in both their self-initiated learning and adult directed contexts. By the end of the Early Years, a wealth of information about attainment exists for every child including progress towards a robust set of Early Learning Goals, making for a seamless transition to Year 1 and laying a firm foundation for future learning and academic success.
